ftp
FTP is how people send files between computers over the internet, like uploading a website or downloading a large document. Someone might say "FTP me that file" meaning "get it to me however you can."
What a model may hear
- File Transfer Protocol networking, system administration
- expect port 21, plain-text credentials, passive or active mode negotiation, and may suggest specific clients or server configurations
- FTP client command Unix shells, Windows command line
- enter an interactive file transfer session or execute a script of FTP commands
- deprecated/insecure protocol security documentation, modern best practices
- refuse to use it, suggest SFTP or FTPS instead, or warn about credential exposure
- anonymous FTP legacy software distribution, academic archives
- assume public read-only access with 'anonymous' username and email as password
Where people and models part ways
“FTP me the report”
Meant: send me the file any way that's easy
May be taken as: the model explains how to install an FTP server or use command-line ftp, which the person cannot do
Say instead: “Send me the report as an email attachment or shared link”
“Is FTP safe?”
Meant: is it okay to use for this file
May be taken as: the model gives a detailed security lecture or assumes the person runs servers, rather than answering the practical question
Say instead: “Should I use FTP or something more secure to send this file?”
“The FTP isn't working”
Meant: my file transfer failed
May be taken as: the model debugs server firewall rules, port 20/21 distinctions, or passive mode settings the person does not control
Say instead: “My file upload keeps failing—what else can I try?”
“Set up FTP for me”
Meant: let me share files with someone
May be taken as: the model writes vsftpd configuration or iptables rules for Linux servers the person does not have
Say instead: “What's the easiest way to share files from my computer?”
Tips
- Say 'file transfer' if you do not mean the specific protocol
- Ask for 'secure file sharing' if you want encryption without technical setup
- Mention your device and situation when asking how to send files
- Say 'command-line FTP tool' only if you want that specific program
- Ask 'what replaced FTP' if a site says it no longer supports it
Often confused with
- SFTP
- runs over SSH, encrypts everything
- FTPS
- FTP with SSL/TLS encryption added
- TFTP
- simpler, unauthenticated, used for booting devices
- HTTP upload
- web browser file transfer, no special client
- SCP
- secure copy over SSH, command-line only
- rsync
- syncs and resumes transfers, more efficient
